Special Care Guide for Emeralds

Emeralds are among the most beautiful gemstones, but they require careful handling. Most emeralds contain natural inclusions and are often treated with oils or resins, making proper care essential.

Understanding Emerald Treatments

Nearly all emeralds are treated with oils or resins to minimize the appearance of inclusions. These treatments can be affected by heat, chemicals, and ultrasonic cleaning. Always inform your jeweler about your emerald before any repair work.

Safe Cleaning Methods

Clean emeralds only with lukewarm soapy water and a soft cloth. Never use steam cleaners or ultrasonic cleaners, as they can remove the treatment oils and cause the stone to appear more included.

Daily Wearing Tips

Remove emerald jewelry before applying lotions, perfumes, or hairspray. Avoid wearing emeralds during activities that could result in impact. Emeralds rate 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale but can chip due to their inclusions.

An emerald's inclusions, called "jardin" (garden), are part of its unique character and story.
